Do You Know How To Linkbait?

Linkbait is something that you will often hear from internet marketers. Some say it’s a good thing, some say it’s a bad thing. But the real issue is… do bloggers know how to linkbait?.

Linkbait - What is it?

Linkbait or linkbaiting is all about writing blog posts that will stir people into action and spur a discussion. Over the internet, a reaction means discussion on facebook, on blogs, and on twitter. With the way discussions are done over the internet right now, they are likely to write about your post on their own websites, or any page online where they can voice an opinion. They tell people about it by linking to you on their twitter pages, facebook walls, etc. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.

Is Linkbait Always a Good Thing?

Whether or not linkbait is good or bad, shady or perfectly ethical depends on whether the article is within the niche of the blog or not. Good linkbaits are those that interest and provoke your target audience, like something on sex ed on a parenting blog. But if you have a parenting blog and then you suddenly talk about the latest showbiz gossip that doesn’t interest your readers, your linkbait isn’t very effective. But some people will argue that linkbait, no matter what kind of reaction it incites, is good.

Linkbait Writing 101

There are certain types of posts or content that seem to attract much linking. Tutorial blogs are very popular, especially when the topic is a new gadget. Controversial opinion articles that tackle a new angle are always popular. Insider tell-alls or “exposure” articles are always effective as linkbaits, but they can have legal repercussions.

Inflammatory pieces are the baser end of the “controversy” scale. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.

If you’re still confused, here’s a rule I use when linkbaiting… always be accountable for anything you write about online.

Give and You Shall Receive

Have you ever heard of the phrase “link love”? Sometimes, it’s the best form of linkbait around. The act of linking to another blogger’s post can also drive traffic to your blog. Moreover, if the other blogger uses Wordpress, your blog post’s URL will instantly appear on the blogger’s website as trackback.

You’re communicating with people through your website or blog. Your website will attract a certain audience. Your blog will start to become popular when people from all over start to visit and communicate with you. You will get to know your audience soon enough when people start commenting on your posts. Imagine yourself talking to your audience when writing linkbaits.
